Proposed fix for bug #1049

Change the filename of the snapshot to be of the form:
  <path>/snapshots/<map-name>.<snapshot-count>.map

Before, the snapshot's filename did not end in ".map", which caused a crash
when the map was saved.

Also fix a bug where a pointer to "buf" was being used after "buf" went
out-of-scope.
