Thanks for the tip, Nathan.

I added 'Option "hw_cursor"' to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and I still have the same
problem.  I am sure that my change was recognized by the driver because the
following appeared in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
 
  (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "HWcursor"

Maybe my card doesn't support hardware accelerated cursors.

After looking at the symptoms more closely, I think the underlying problem is
that the cursor disappears when zooming (and that the refresh problem shown in
attachment #565 is an artifact of this).  In other words, whenever an entire
view refreshes (by zooming, moving, rotating, etc.), the entire view is blitted.
 If the cursor happens to be located in that view, then it gets blitted over, as
well.

Nathan, in your working version, does the cursor ever disappear?
