Error:
If you're close to a patch and shift-click on it in the camera view, sometimes it selects right "through" the patch.

How close you have to be seems to depend on the size of the patch and maybe the grid setting. Large patches are harder to select, more prone to the click going right "through" the patch to whatever's behind it.

Cause of Error:
It's most easily reproduced with a bevel. Make a large bevel and get nose to nose with the curve in the camera view, then try to select it.

Speculation: even when "select patches by bounding box" is disabled it's selecting patches by bounding box and not by the actual patch surface.
