it seems there is no mechanism to look for a new version of default_project.proj
and force a regen like we used to have in 1.2 (quakev2.qe4, quakev3.qe4 etc.)

I realized that while applying the patches for bug 795 and bug 781

or is it a simple version problem to update in those .proj files
