I don't run A/V software.  My machine is a fresh build.  No other apps were 
running at the time.

My map is a large terrain map,  have you tried saving any large 8192x8192x1024 
maps ?

Saving as q3dm7sample.map takes less than 1 second.

Saving q3dm7sample.xmap takes 21 seconds here...  Still too slow.
