i am a proud newb, but this is a smp install of linux on another machine (so 
says the admin) and here's a snapshot of top: 
http://www.shadowspawn.net/temp/top.htm and the commandline definitely has the -
threads in it.

i can nice/renice the process priority, so i am guessing that there is no limit 
on process threads i can launch as su. then again, i'm probably doing something 
wrong, but not sure what... maybe a permissions setting in order to run more 
then one thread?
