This has become much murkier to deal with now that we have multiple extensions
for different map types.

Are region files now:

blah.map.reg
blah.xmap.reg

Are snapsot files now:
blah.map.0
blah.xmap.0

I have no idea what to do here really, even if everything is the above case,
someone more familiar with the map saving mechanisms should probably pick this
up, or reveal all the gory details to me :p
