create a brush, ctrl+8 to make 8-sided prism, drag the top verts inwards with 
VESF mode to create a tapered prism, but don't bother straightening out the 
faces afterwards. Leave vertex mode and move the brush around, then return to 
vertex mode and tweak a vertex. Repeat the last steps until the brush vanishes.
