Actually yes, I'd rather have the discussion evolve on the GtkRadiant 
mailing list, for two reasons:

- someone else might take the time to answer and bring more information 
besides me
- the information would be archived

So, for a quick summary:

A map is a bunch of brushes, organised via entities (that's for the game 
code only).

A brush is a convex volume, stored in the .map as the list of planes that 
define it. The editor builds the faces at load time. The other per-face 
info is texture positioning. And the editor as the appropriate code to 
convert the plane texture representation to UV coordinates on the edges.
