Can't reproduce this in 1.2..
created a brush in XY top view with bottom left corner at 0 0 0.. size 248 by 
192 by 8... grid setting 8 units... selection > arbitrary rotation > Z 45 > 
Apply... creates a pretty close to perfect 45 degree version of the brush.
