Could this be purely caused by radiant snapping the plane-points for each face 
to integers? I'm unable to reproduce anything other than symptoms of this.

Free-rotation is a bad tool for general use, because it directly rotates the 
plane-points - so if the rotation is not a multiple of 90 degrees, their 
coordinates won't stay as integers, and they'll be rounded down to the nearest 
whole number. That tutorial is telling people to use the tool in a bad way.. 
the author or the site editor might be interested to know this.
