This project is to bring Freespace to Linux/MacOSX whereas FS2Open's
goal is to greatly improve/change the game for mods, new graphics
hardware and what not. There are those who are working to get FS2Open
playable/building on Linux and are, at least in part, using this project
for that. The goal of the two projects is different and a mix of
FS2Open (except perhaps as small bug fixes) into this project goes
against that goal.
This is simplifying it a bit but the goal of FS2Open isn't to play
Freespace but to expand the game engine to support other game types and
technologies. The basic goal of this project is to have as solid and
complete port as possible from the Windows version of Freespace.
It's only my opinion but I think it's good to have them separate.
Freespace 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games of all time and I would
like them to remain that way. But I also can't wait to have some fun
with the changes that FS2Open is doing to support great mods like The
Babylon Project and Black Water Ops, among others.
