Ryan gave a talk at a LUG meeting within the past year or three
(that saw relatively wide distribution as mp3) where he stated that
the ideal was to simply have a cross-platform developer on the team,
maintaining the alt-OS builds, as big porting problems are nipped in
the bud before they become big, and better code is produced on all
platforms as a result.
Not quite the "start in Linux and port to Winders" idea floated by

> >
> > A slightly personal note: What I
guess was some time ago, Ryan ported
> > Prey over to Linux. I had bought
Prey but, after playing it a tad,
> > never finished it since I couldn't
really bring myself to boot into
> > Windows. His port of Prey gave me
the opportunity to actually play
> > through the game I had bought
without having to basically disconnect
> > (via booting into Windows) the
central point of my home network, ie. I
> > actually got around to playing
through it. Without Ryan's work I
> > would have wasted my money in
buying that game. I sent him off an
> > e-mail thanking him, and he
responded promptly and positively. If
> > there's any fundamental tragedy
here it's that Ryan's work on UT3 has
> > been lost----he's a good guy as
far as I can tell, and a hell of a
> > programmer, but because of absurd
legal permutations his work is never
> > going to see the light of day, and
we're never going to get to enjoy
> > it. It's a fucking shame, and I
don't believe for a second that Ryan
> > is at any fault here; he's been
