ALSA sound without OSS emulation

According to the README, ALSA is supported without needing OSS
emulation. Unfortunately, if I don't load snd-pcm-oss, I don't get
sound. I get an error message on the console saying /dev/[sound/]dsp
could not be opened (because /dev/dsp doesn't get created until I load
the oss modules). I'm using a 2.6.3 kernel with the latest ALSA modules
on a Debian Sid system. Everything else that uses ALSA works fine.
(xmms, esd with libesd-alsa, etc.) Any suggestions?
