Effect of memory in computer and graphics card

What is the effect of main memory over 512MB under Linux or Win 2000?
How about the advantages of 256MB vs. 128 MB on the graphics card?
I have been using an LCD and running X in 24/32 bit color. I hear it looks
the same on an LCD at 16 bit and I bet that will let me crank up the
detail or AA. especially at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200.
