error when starting

[Harold E Vine III]

when i try to start the game i get an error.

"Couldn't set video mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual"

using mandrake 9.2 and the built in drivers for the radeon 7500 which is
supposed to support 3d hardware.
as a test i ran this:

[harold at localhost harold]$ glxgears
835 frames in 5.0 seconds = 167.000 FPS
720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.000 FPS
720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.000 FPS
800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 160.000 FPS
720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.000 FPS
800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 160.000 FPS
720 frames in 5.0 seconds = 144.000 FPS
800 frames in 5.0 seconds = 160.000 FPS

any idea's?
