Well go download and install them from http://alsa-project.org;
depending on your distribution, there may be already built packages for
it, so you may want to see those first. In the event there are no
prebuilt packages, just go to the page above, grab the alsa-lib,
alsa-utils, alsa-oss and of course the alsa-driver packages, install
them in the same order (i.e first the lib then the rest, and finally the
driver). It would be quite convenient to know what type of sound hw do
you have, and check it's options on the supported cards section at the
project's page. All the information you may need is covered there, just
*read carefully*. As a tip, a good idea when you build the driver
yourself would be to pass the following arguments to the ./configure
script: --with-oss=yes, this will enable the OSS emulation layer;
--with-sequencer=yes, this enables both playback and recording
capabilities for MIDI, how good support for this last option may be
depends greatly on your hardware and the degree of support it has from
the drivers.

Good luck!

I don't think so, I have always used ALSA with the OSS emulation layer,
of course it's not perfect and has some flaws, but it works pretty well
for me. I must say that I *do* get poly even with the alsa-oss modules
loaded.
