I'm having similar issues, with an athlon XP 1600 I get 7fps min 20 fps
average using flyby-antalus.sh benchmark. Changing resolutions don't
appear to have a noticable change in FPS, but I get proportional speed
boosts by over clocking my system.

So from my experience it appears that *something* is chewing up CPU in
the rendering pipeline someplace.  The OpenGL render in UT2003 is known
to be not terribly efficent at this point, but systems with similar
specs running nVidia cards appear to get higher frame rates.

I've been thinking of getting/borrowing a GF4-4200 (a roughly equivalent
card to my 9000pro) and then run the benchmark to see how big of a
difference it is.

I don't run quake3, I want to test it on Descent 3, but don't have
enough spare after loading UT2003 ::sigh:: need new hard drive. :^)
