it's interesting to note that several desktop environments do silly
things like "draw a mini-desktop in the pager every 30 seconds"

gnome and kde have both been guilty of this. if you don't want a jerk
every half minute or whatever, turn it off (usually just by right
clicking and changing the properties of the applet itself.)

this can have the appearance of slowing down a game, since your average
framerate WILL drop a chunk every time the stupid app grabs the bloody X
display as an xpm and processes it. :)

(gnome moreso than kde, iirc, kde just grabs window placement and size
data.)
