The Win version required DirectX 9, so it's obviously linked to some .dll's that are in the client, who's other functions may or may not be required for Linux. One of the Pandemic devs did post on LucasArts forums, but seeing their forum is a joke, I doubt many people saw the message. He did say they were working on a linux port, however there were no other details. On a note about the Win version, I was unable to join the server, even after setting it up and running it, I could initiate connection which also showed in the hokey server console, but my client was unable to load the map. I tried both net and lan configs, yet neither worked despite being on the same subnet, with no firewall restrictions between me and the server. I've since dumped the Win version as it's so rediculous it's not worth the bother to even attempt. Also, no readme, no port information, and administration controls or options make this one of the most half-assed dedicated servers ever. I also tested several public servers running last nite, to get a feel for gameplay on the win boxes. Few were operating at advertised 50 player configs, which I understand is the max, and/or with 32 bots per team. I gather the bandwidth required to do so is keeping many out of the game. The 20 or so servers I joined, some with players and some without, all felt jittery. Bots seemed to move smoothly, however any players in the game warped quite often, making it hard to get a bead on them. Delayed reactions, especially when sniping, made it tough for me to tell when I had actually hit someone, as I'd notice them fall about the same time I shot a 2nd time. The dedicated server needs to be stripped down to just the engine, maps, and data I/O. After we get that, and a Linux/BSD port, we can truly evaluate it. Until then, I'll keep my BF42 servers running. /BA Michigan Burbs -----Original Message----- From: admin at typhoonservers.com [mailto:admin at typhoonservers.com] Sent: Friday, September 24, 2004 10:19 AM To: swbf at icculus.org Subject: [swbf] Linux patch Any word on the status of this? There are always more bugs and issues than you ever have a hope of fixing in time and it's only developers like Id Software and Valve Software who can basically dictate terms to their publishers and take the "when it's done" approach. PS. Notice that I left out 3D Realms and "Duke Nukem Forever" since that title is actually a hoax that gained so much momentum they had to pretend it was true. ;) -----Original Message----- From: Michael Ressen [mailto:netadmin at michiganburbs.com] Sent: Sunday, 26 September 2004 5:26 PM To: swbf at icculus.org Subject: Re: [swbf] Client Browser fixes Kevin Lockitt wrote: >Jesus Christ man, calm down! Full Spectrum Warrior is also from Pandemic. And they're not "screwing the community" as some people here put it, but trying their very best to clear up matters. For starters, read these forum postings: http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=136510 http://www.lucasforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=136430 http://www.teamwarfare.com/forums/showthread.asp?forumid=237&threadid=171178 The last one has official responses by a Pandemic member - so they're actively doing community support, but I also suspect that they don't know that this list ist going to be the authoritative one ;) --ck From sam at neuroflux.com Sun Sep 26 21:32:49 2004 From: sam at neuroflux.com (sam at neuroflux.com) Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 19:32:49 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Battlefront server behind a firewall Message-ID: <1104.24.119.165.179.1096248769.squirrel@24.119.165.179> Has anyone been able to get a BF server to run behind a firewall? The installer will automatically search for the folder where you originally installed Star Wars Battlefront and install the update. If the update does not locate Star Wars Battlefront on your system, you may need to reinstall the game and then run the Battlefront1_00.exe. This update for the game has been modified to correct the following: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ * Improves NAT negotiation for online games which may help improve multiplayer performance. * Minor fix to server browser screen. File Version: Battlefront1_00.exe (LucasArts FTP Site) [/notes] This release is for US GAMES ONLY! They have not released an International version yet.
