I get that too... latest nvidia drivers, GefOrce4, Pentium4 system running 
Mandrake

I just kinda cheat by pulling down console and using "please fly" to move 
ahead a bit until it clears up, then again to turn it off.

Sorry..it's just a workaround but it does work..
