Compiling problems in slackware 8.1

[This is the latest CVS, by the way]

chunky at chunky:/usr/local/stuff/apps/smpeg$ sh ./autogen.sh
automake: configure.in: required file `./depcomp' not found
Now you are ready to run ./configure


If I try to compile it, it ends up just dying horribly.

If I copy /usr/share/automake/depcomp to the local dir, I get the
following when I actually try to compile it:

@AS@ -c mmxflags_asm.S  -fPIC -DPIC -o .libs/mmxflags_asm.lo
../libtool: @AS@: command not found
make[1]: *** [mmxflags_asm.lo] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/local/stuff/apps/smpeg/video'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I'm using slack 8.1
Automake is version 1.5
Autoconf is version 2.53
