Weird, but in a good way. I haven't tried playing .MOD files in XMMS, 
but the only thing I can think of that would make any difference is the 
reverb setting which, as you must have seen, I kept at 0, like SDL_mixer 
does.

There are some options which supposedly can improve sound quality, but I 
didn't experiment with those. I was thinking of letting the user change 
MikMod settings through environment variables, but decided to leave it 
as it is, at least for now.

Mine too. I was surprised when I found that the plaympeg command that 
comes with the SMPEG library is just as greedy. Kudos to whoever added 
that check to SDL_mixer!
