This sounds like the behaviour I got when my setup of ALSA got corrupted. Configure ALSA as described here (esp. part 6): http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?page=DmixPlugin Make sure buffer_size is at least 4K and a multiple of two; dmix becomes quite quirky otherwise.
