Some more information on this problem:

It's the compiler that kills the 'release' versions.. or rather the 
optimizations performed by the compiler uncover some problems (alignments 
maybe?). On sparc, I'm using this version:

$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 3.4.3 (csl-sol210-3_4-branch+sol_rpath)
Copyright (C) 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

(Note the 'csl-sol210-3_4-branch+sol_rpath', it's a SUN-customized 
version).

I just compiled and ran both the release client and server by setting 
OPTIMIZE to "-O0" for sparc. I'll be investigating the alignment 
optimizations performed by that compiler...
