The issue is, what kind of server is it ? NC Server ? ID Standard server ?
Running any particular mod ? like action quake ? All that info should be 
provided.
You also should be carefull with how the servers are configured, some 
for lan or internet, make sure you use the correct route for it... if 
it's configured for internet, make sure it doesn't connect through a 
private lan interface, some servers crash with it...
