[prey] Sys_Error: _default material not found

Is this the retail version, installed with --from-install?

The installer will incorrectly report success but not copy any of the 
data files if you gave --media a bogus path. This is an installer bug.

Uninstall and try again with the right path (it's prey/base, not prey!)
