I bet you forgot you sent an application all that time ago, but you did! :) Here's the deal: - For those that missed it, this is a MacOS beta test. If you have Windows or Linux, then I didn't read your email carefully enough, and you shouldn't be here. Email me directly (and not the mailing list) and I'll quietly remove you. - The rest of you, start downloading! http://0day.icculus.org/private/postal2beta/postal2-mac-beta1.dmg username: postal2mac password: p33p33Hz The file is big, like, 700 megabytes big. 733969712 bytes, specifically. Do not distribute that file to anyone. It will stop working in a few weeks (but we'll hopefully hook you up with a new build and/or be done before then). Now, your goals: test. That's it. Play the hell out of it. Go through the whole game, fight on-line in multiplayer, try to break things. Multiplayer is compatible with Windows and Linux client and servers. Discussion goes to this email list (postal2mac at icculus.org), where myself and the rest of the beta testers will see it. You can feel free to discuss the beta publically, or (for those that run news sites) even write articles about it, so long as you understand three things: 1) Please make it clear that you're discussing a beta product, so bugs and problems may exist (and hopefully will be fixed). 2) Don't give the game to anyone. 3) You're here to find bugs and not to report news. While you are welcome as a writer, you aren't here for your writing talent. I expect feedback. Bug reports go to https://bugzilla.icculus.org/ ... Discussion goes to this list. If you report a bug here, I'll probably point you to bugzilla, so that I don't forget to fix the bug. Think of bugzilla as a collective memory. :) Other than that, have fun! --ryan. If you happen to have Roxio Toast, you can mount the disc image through that and it'll fool the installer into thinking it's a real CD. If this is a serious issue for anyone (i.e. - no CD burner), let me know and I'll send you an updated installer that won't require a physical disc, so you can use it with the disc image. I doubt its the game, probably resolvable using the Ishock controller app. The game, as expected, does make the Aibook pretty hot, the freeware Temperature Monitor app. shows the temp floating between 140F and 144.5F which is the fan kick on for this model. 2. the game probably would run on my B&W with its 600Mhz G4 and 32MB Radeon but the current beta seems to lack medium and low textures so you play in a white/grey shaded world. The animation minus texture maps works fine on the old beast. 3. Installer takes forever 4. The things in the sewers underneath the library are damn near invincible, close range pistol and shotgun hits to no avail..should have made that jump I guess...but then there seems to be more to explore down there so there has to be some way to kill the things...which look like skinned dogs. 5. What the heck do you do in the Library anyway...besides try and fail to resist the temptation to sneak up behind Bin Laden in the reading room with a shotgun (he has the assault rifle so don't miss). I have the library book but there is nothing readily apparent to DO with it. On the other hand, although there is only like..1 bookshelf texture, there is some nice architectural design on that board; look up at the glass ceiling for a bit. You can also jump from the second level onto the tops of the bookcases below, doesn't do anything though, I was hoping for a medkit although I located the others. 6. On the first day, when the protesters storm RWS, if you "accidentally" shoot up the RWS staff...it doesn't seem to bother them much, they never return fire. 7. Car windows, video games, televisions...oddly invincible...not sure whether its the engine or whether there just aren't a lot of destructible items but this is one tough environment. 8. The shovel is too weak, you hit a guy with a shovel 2-3 times, he's going down, let alone 5-6 times. 9. Maybe its me but the "police meter" seems pretty lenient, you can lay waste to a dozen people, half of them cops, hide in a corner for about 5 minutes and then walk out like nothing happened...perhaps if you spent more time on the run? 10. Yes they are almost invisible, they are zombie dogs, and not needed to be confronted for the main part of the story. Pass the game once, to make the next single player game afterwards into enhanced mode. Also cheats become enable via a menu when you pass the game. So you can explore the game with higher difficult setting, and go wild. > > 5. The object for the library is to get out alive. In one of the levels they inform you not to rush, to take on one enemy at a time, so that you wont die so quickly. After you complete the library, you have another hate group after you on the streets. > 6. On the first day, when the protesters storm RWS, if you > "accidentally" shoot up the RWS staff...it doesn't seem to bother them > much, they never return fire. They are your co-workers, so they will give you a helping hand on the streets, and help you in battles, but you can turn them against you, if you kill enough of them. They are tougher group to handle since they have the machine guns. > 8. The shovel is too weak, you hit a guy with a shovel 2-3 times, he's > going down, let alone 5-6 times. Actually the shovel is the second weakest weapon. Baton is the weakest in the start. But then when you finish the game the first time, the baton had a enhanced feature with secondary fire. You are able to explode people's head. The shovel also allows you to decapitating people's heads, play soccer with them afterwards. Or if you manage to train a dog as friend, the dog will fetch it and other things for you. > 9. Maybe its me but the "police meter" seems pretty lenient, you can > lay waste to a dozen people, half of them cops, hide in a corner for > about 5 minutes and then walk out like nothing happened...perhaps if > you spent more time on the run? Depends on how far to the right the bar is, and how many cops there are around you. If there are still cops that are looking for you the bar will stay there, till you hide. Sometimes I had to wait for 15 min to get the full bar down to zero so I can get to one location to another. As you progress in the games, you will not only face cops, but fbi, and military personal. > 10. When cremating an insolent jerk who you had to terminate because > he wouldn't sign your petition....step back after pouring the gasoline > and before you throw a match...although that nice lady did offer to get > me a bucket of water. Yes, it is hard to burn someone with the gasoline before you go into enhanced mode of the game. Tip, you can also use your own piss to put out any fire that is burning you up, just aim up. After you beat the game, your piss is actually napalm, so burning people becomed easier. Cesar From icculus at clutteredmind.org Sun May 23 06:54:02 2004 From: icculus at clutteredmind.org (Ryan C. Installer takes forever Unavoidable. bzip2 compression is slow, but it's the only way I could wedge the whole thing onto a 700mb disc. If some discussions go as planned, we might have to fit a whole lot more on there, too, so it might be a dual-disc deal in the long run, which means I can relax the compression and speed it up. I have found that dashing for a tunnel and just leaving the area, ie. going through a Loading Zone will get rid of the police. Even if you immediately return back through the runnel the police chasing you will have vanished, even if they were right behind you before. You do keep your police rating though, but it never seems to summon police to your position. It just means that if they see you they will try to arrest you/kill you. -- Alex Wasserman If someone were to ask me for a short cut to sensuality, I would suggest he go shopping for a used 427 Shelby-Cobra. It took almost as much time, at least it seemed that way, and sometimes the game was slightly jumpy after warping through a load zone. Actually, I wasn't playing that level straight so it didn't bother me, but there do seem to be a lot of load zones. It took almost as much time, at least it seemed that way, and sometimes the game was slightly jumpy after warping through a load zone. Actually, I wasn't playing that level straight so it didn't bother me, but there do seem to be a lot of load zones. I agree that either more zones with seamless transitions, or fewer with slightly longer, but more obvious time consumption would be good. I agree that the auto save thingy gets annoying after awhile, I think I'll disable it. About the loading of zones, yes it takes awhile, but it's not too bad. I wonder if they could implement something like what Halo does for loading the levels. From icculus at clutteredmind.org Sun May 23 11:00:25 2004 From: icculus at clutteredmind.org (Ryan C. You can always tweak and modify your ini files. Look in your /Home/Library/Application Support/Postal 2/System/ You can modify both user and postal2 ini files. For custom display resolution go to the following: [SDLDrv.SDLClient] And change the 2 number for full screen: FullscreenViewportX=1600 FullscreenViewportY=1024 The above is for a 22" Apple cinema display. Also if you haven't done so, search for the line: VARSize=128 The number represents the amount of vram your video card has. By default this is set to 32, so if you have more than that you will need to change it. Another tweak that I do, but maybe Ryan can tell me more about it, since I have heard that changing it does nothing to the game. [Engine.GameEngine] CacheSizeMegs=1024 The number should be 3/4 of real ram you have. So if you have 512, you should set it to 384, and so on. Unfortunately I don't know what the setting is.. or if there is one, to choose which actual display is used on multiple display systems. It may be automatically choosing the most capable display? But on the pc side, people have been telling me that number does not matter, that they heard it from one of the Epic guys, that number does nothing to the game. Someone from AA beta told me that, since if you look at all the UT, UT2k3, and UT2k4 tweak sites for the pc, they have always recommended this number to be 3/4 of what your real ram is. But I have found that 1024 to be the max. I tried to give it 2048, the max any one app can have in OS X, and the game just does not launch, this was with AA. I have been happy with 1024 settings. Since I always make this change, I figure I ask Ryan to shed light on this settings if it does make a difference or not, like some of the pc users say. This is the amount of AGP memory we use for vertex data. 32 is sufficient for damned near everything. If you set it too high or too low, your framerate goes in the toilet. Increasing it may help (up to say 64 or 96) on a card with a large amount of VRAM but as Ryan says, VARSize controls how geometry data is cached in AGP memory, that is, the _Size_ of the _Vertex Array Range_, NOT the amount of VRAM you have. If you allocate your entire VRAM to VARSize you could have problems with other data having to be moved around between system memory and VRAM, thus slowing things down. There are also some differences between how the PC and the Mac handle AGP memory, so you cannot directly compare the two. ben From jay.harris at mac.com Sun May 23 17:50:01 2004 From: jay.harris at mac.com (Jason Harris) Date: Sun, 23 May 2004 22:50:01 +0100 Subject: [postal2mac] First impressions In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <243FFCC6-AD03-11D8-9848-000393CA0066@mac.com> Thanks for clearing that up for us Ben. -Jay On 23 May 2004, at 22:03, hotblack wrote: > > On 23 May 2004, at 21:40, Cesar Barcenas wrote: > >> I thought this was the case also, since I remember >> there was a mac specific tweak site, that recommended >> to set the value = to your vram size. > > Increasing it may help (up to say 64 or 96) on a card with a large > amount of VRAM but as Ryan says, VARSize controls how > geometry data is cached in AGP memory, that is, the _Size_ of the > _Vertex Array Range_, NOT the amount of VRAM you have. Most specifically, there's no AGP aperture on the Mac. You can assign almost all your system RAM (it's not VRAM, the VRAM is something else entirely) to AGP. MacOSX caps it at 25% of your system RAM, and you can't allocate a vertex_array_range block that is more than 75% of this space. So if you set VARsize to something bigger than around: (0.75 * 0.25 * total_memory) Then it'll probably fail. If you ask for too much VAR, you get none, and everything is REALLY slow. If you ask for too little, you fall off the fast path, and everything is REALLY slow. Naturally, the larger you set this, the more memory you're consuming. Feel free to experiment, but while bumping it up a little might help, it's a black or white thing: you either have enough VAR for the rendering, or you don't. Once you have enough allocated, adding more doesn't improve performance, but it does take away from available RAM. It's a zen art, basically. Or, leave it at 32. :) --ryan. Misc Issues ____________________________________________________ My hardware & OS: OS X 10.3.3 + ATI Radeon 9000pro Temporarily using G4 500Mhz Cube ____________________________________________________ I. Settings Keyboard Controls menu issues A. Four Nonfunctional Keys: F14, F15, Clear. Also F16 shows up as "None". B. Both left and right control show up as: L Control C. Both left and right shift show up as: L Shift D. Command (Open Apple) shows up as: F24 E. Kensington ExpertMouse Trackball Issues. NOTE: This billiard-sized trackball has 10 buttons and a mouse wheel. The four major buttons are at top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right, with six addition miniature buttons across the very top. The equivalent turbo mouse pro is described here: http://www.kensington.com/html/1159.html 1. OK: Left mouse and right mouse are correctly associated with the major buttons at bottom left and bottom right. Wheel is also correctly associated with mousewheel up & down. Now on to the problems: 2. Both top left & top right major buttons are the same: Mouse5 3. Four of the top six buttons are duplicates of other keys or buttons. These read, from 1 to 6: 1) L Control 2) Alt 3) F24 4) Middle Mouse 5) Mouse4 6) Mouse5 Note that only 4) and 5) are unique. Mouse5 is redundant in triplicate with the two top major buttons. And L Control, Alt, and F24 (aka Command/open-apple) are duplicates with the keyboard. F. left click selects a Key to change, however, simply *moving the mouse off* deselects it. (Note: Esc key deselects differently, with a clear sound feedback). I suspect the deselection when mouse-over ends is a bug. G. Controls correctly go into the chosen slot (of three possible), unlike the less intuitive UT2004 keyboard control menu. This is good. However, when a key already exists in one of the three, it does not switch, and can be confusing. 1. For example, say the three slots for Strafe Left are set to: 1) (blank) 2) numpad4 3) A If the user clicks on (blank) in slot 1, and presses "A" nothing happens and it remains blank, and there is no feedback to indicate there was a problem. a. Possible solution #1: It would be better feedback if it turned into A, and the A in the third slot was cleared. b. Possible solution #2: Do nothing as before, but play a sound, like the one that is played when you select a key with left mouse, then press the Esc key. II. Settings Keyboard Control trivial Issues A. Option shows up as Alt. i. Also, left vs. right distinction does not exist. B. "Weapon Selection" order in the menu is different from "Inventory Selection" order. Weapons: 1) Previous 2) Next 3) Drop; Inventory: 1) Drop 2) Next 3) Previous III. Audio Settings issues: A. changing either 1) reverse stereo, 2) music volume, or 3) sound volume pauses the animation and the background music significantly long (perhaps about 5 full seconds). This does not happen with the other selections, such as "announcer". The "dialog" results in a very brief video pause, but that is less jarring because it is shorter in duration and the background music continues uninterrupted. IV. Other: There is no audible "click" when taking a screenshot. I have to go to the console to confirm it was taken. (I do like that it displays the file name there, and that screenshots go into the main Postal2 app support folder). I'm pretty sure the .ini setting is respected in-game. "setres WIDTHxHEIGHT" in the console works if you get desperate. I think the UI in-game is a bunch of hardcoded values in UnrealScript, which means I can't change them without breaking network compatibility. Had the same problem with other games, like, say, ut2004. The difference is that ut2004 had the luxury of letting me fill in Mac-specific resolutions before the game shipped. At least one licensee (America's Army) wrote code to query the OS (or SDL, in this case) for supported resolutions instead of hardcoding a list of pseudo-standard ones. I should nag Running With Scissors to do something similiar for the upcoming expansion pack patch. Actually, I should probably check the source before I spout off as an authority on the subject any further. --ryan. Two points: 1) LCD: I posted about this in Bugzilla already, but this would be ideal for LCD (PBs, iMacs, Cinema Displays) running in slightly unusual native reslutions like 1440x900. I posted the whole list of current hardware LCD native res's here: https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1730 and a duplicate bug for ut2k4 #1729. 2) OS X 10.3.4 is now out. The blurb states some improvements to OpenGL. I don't know how stuff at that level works, but it would be worth checking to see if it breaks something. If Ryan already receives pre-releases of OS X as a dev, then maybe he knows of any issues already, but if not, everyone keep an eye out for new graphical issues after upgrading to 10.3.4. --Robert (Santaduck) From webman2k at optonline.net Wed May 26 22:47:12 2004 From: webman2k at optonline.net (Mark) Date: Wed, 26 May 2004 22:47:12 -0400 Subject: Sound bug at Brewery Level In-Reply-To: <4C9B0A62-AF83-11D8-A1DB-0030657ED3F0@hawaii.edu> References: <5F389580-ACF1-11D8-82B6-003065D5A2C8@sietchtabr.plus.com> <3787EEC4-AE03-11D8-9E1A-0030657ED3F0@hawaii.edu> <40B3050B.8020709@clutteredmind.org> <4C9B0A62-AF83-11D8-A1DB-0030657ED3F0@hawaii.edu> Message-ID: <27B5D3F3-AF88-11D8-AA56-0003937986F6@optonline.net> Bug 1744 logged: Toward the end of the Brewery level (you're a gimp trying to escape) the redneck "Ya Hoo" sounds tend to loop on top of each other, creating a very non realistic sound - sort of like a bad "Redneck Ya Hoo Remix." You run back in the storage area, and use the long hallways to get the lock on him, and fire the seeking rocket on him, while I dash to the next long hallway. The game is cool, unlike what other people think of it. It can get as violent as you want. So I like that. I was thinking that Postal 2 may very well become the new Duke Nukem, though more violent and less "nude" situations, but I'm sure mods will change that. The most annoying bug I found, was that there are a lot of clipping issues. I hope they are resolved when the final game ships. Well, yes and no. If the CD wasn't filled to the brim, we could use a weaker (but faster) compression, like zlib. As it stands, we're using bzip2 for compression, which is very good, but very slow. I looked into this, and libbzip2 looks like a good candidate for vectorization, but who has time to write Altivec code for someone else's open source project? :) We're also discussing some add-on stuff for the Mac version that'll bump us to two CDs, in which case we'll reduce compression, since the second disc will give us a surplus of free space. Also, someone noted that there's some sound files incorrectly installed in the System directory. I haven't checked the size, but that could be a lot of free'd up disc real estate. UT2003 was two discs filled to the brim with bzip2 data. _That_ was a slow install. :) > this game is great as on a g4cube i got 640RAM and a geforce2mx and for > the moment i haven't found any bugs, but sometimes the game is little > slow on my cube but it normal. > i think the mimimal frequence to play is 700mhz. Probably a reasonable estimate. Generally the people with a 700MHz processor are gonna get beat up due to a lack of physical RAM, though. This game really benefits noticibly in the jump from 256 to 512 megs of RAM. --ryan. From icculus at clutteredmind.org Sat May 29 23:05:00 2004 From: icculus at clutteredmind.org (Ryan C. Also, the Windows 1409 patch just came out. It SHOULD be network compatible with 1408 (what the Mac version is, currently). I'll be updating the Mac port to 1409, but I haven't gotten the code changes from Running With Scissors yet. Likewise for the next expansion pack. --ryan.
