thanks, mikael. i believe you're correct about 'internal padding
thingy'. <br>

j., i tried the gtk-theme-switch, but it doesn't seem to have any
effect on firefox, thunderbird or thunar, the three i wish to
change the padding color for. these three <i>do </i>change when
using gnome, xfce and kde. in openbox, they revert to this sea gray
which i can't stand. however, kde apps and opera retain whichever qt
color scheme i'm currently using in kde.<br>
