So this task cannot be accomplished in the current openbox.

That's quite unfortunate and I think that the developers should
consider making it possible in upcoming releases.

On my MS Windows machines I will always install Virtuawin
(http://virtuawin.sf.net) which has this capability.  Also,
a long time ago, I used to use FVWM on my Linux boxes and it
also has this capability.  Quickly moving the pointer to the
screen edge to change desktops beats fumbling with keys
or key combinations.  It should not be that difficult to
implement.
