Dead space will happen with Xinerama if the monitors are different
sizes, because the root window (desktop) in X is always a rectangle.
So if I understand you correctly, there is nothing left to fix..
Unless your issue is something other than the dead space existing.

Openbox won't place new windows inside the dead space, it knows about
it (if it does there is a problem). You can still move stuff into it
if you want to, like you can move things off of a monitor.  There's no
reason to stop that.
