I have no idea what you mean. I even installed dwm to test it, I am 
still no clearer, can you clarify?

There are more important factors here, openbox version, X version, 
composite on/off?

I'm not really sure what you want, and your original case (1) involves a 
lot of variables outside those you wish to hi-light. I've tried pidgin 
in openbox and dwm and to be honest i have no idea what you mean in 
either wm, i'd even go so far as to worry you are not even using pidgin 
:) -  As a wild guess it might be something to do with the way dwm 
focuses windows on hover?
