I'm using 3.8 as well.  I use gentoo, so it's compiled for me when I
emerge it.  However I have also downloaded the source and compiled it
on my own - thinking that perhaps the gentoo ebuild script was
screwing something up.  I'll have to look it more closely to see
what's happening when it crashes.
