Indeed, after a night's sleep I determined it to be a GTK+ 2.4 problem.
With whatever X, both flux and openbox, and GTK 2.4 it doesn't work. With
whatever X, both flux and openbox, and GTK 2.2.4 it works.

Sorry about bringing up and issue that turned out to be OT.
