Behold, tiny problem already solved... Manually setting the wallpaper 
made it disappear (previously, I'd been using the wallpaper that also 
serves as a background for my display manager and just stuck after 
having logged in). I'm sure there's an explanation for it, but I'm 
already happy I've got my transparent XChat back. :-)
