[obdgpslogger] Engine support ?

Hi there

Just stumbled onto this software - looks to be exactly what I want.

Caveats - 
I don't have the machine I will be doing this on assembled yet. It will be
the latest fedora.
I don't have access to the engine I wish to work with yet - it is yet to be
installed.

What I would like to understand is how generic/specific a given engine's OBD
dialogue is ?
Does it matter what engine this software talks to ? 
Do manufacturers faithfully use the same codes for all of their engines ?
