Have you thought of writing a FLTK plugin? The Fast Light Toolkit is small and very good for static linking: http://www.fltk.org The resulting plugin will then only depend on some standard X11 libraries. This could then i.e. work as a fallback if someone has problems with GTK. The license is LGPL but with some exceptions.
