run as non-root in Linux

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am a bit of a Linux novice.

I read in one of Ryan's beta text files that MOHAA:SH on Linux could be run as a user other than root.

Could some tell me how to set this up, or point me to a good tutorial? Like, if I create a new user (give him a unique ID and such), what will I have to CHMOD and CHOWN and whatever.
