Two things;
First, It would be really nice if you could provide lots of logo-y
type bits for varying bit depths; my laptop is running at 8-bit, and
half the funky install things out there look FUGLY

Secondly, when I click "start" after installing something, I'm not
currently provided the ability to unmount the CD until I've quit the
install program;

root at lefty:~# umount /mnt/cdrom
umount: /mnt/cdrom: device is busy
root at lefty:~# lsof | grep cdrom
sh        497 chunky  cwd    DIR       3,64    2048    57344 /mnt/cdrom
sh        497 chunky  255r   REG       3,64    6640    59246 /mnt/cdrom/setup.sh
.setup497 518 chunky  cwd    DIR       3,64    2048    57344 /mnt/cdrom
bash      519   root  cwd    DIR       3,64    2048    57344 /mnt/cdrom
sh        520   root  cwd    DIR       3,64    2048    57344 /mnt/cdrom
sh        520   root  255r   REG       3,64    6640    59246 /mnt/cdrom/setup.sh
.setup520 538   root  cwd    DIR       3,64    2048    57344 /mnt/cdrom
root at lefty:~#

Which is, I think, doing some voodoo I don't get, but shouldn't it be
fairly to exec(3) the relevant bit?

I started setup.sh from outside the install dir with "sh
/mnt/cdrom/setup.sh"...
