UT Classic

I'm running Gentoo (2004.0) with the 2.6.3 kernel and can't seem to get
UT installed properly using the Loki installer (via the 'emerge'
command) - note that I purposely unmasked UT in Gentoo's package
management system as it has some sort of security problem which I'm not
interested in.

When installing I enounter these kinds of errors:
cp: reading `/mnt/cdrom/Web/plaintext/defaults_bots.uhtm': Input/output
error

So I copied the contents of the cd to a temporary directory (/dump/ut in
this case) and ran:
# CD_ROOT=/dump/ut/ emerge unreal-tournament

This installed everything successfully, and the 451 patch was applied by
portage.

However, when attempting to run the game I get this error:

Unreal engine initialized

SDLClient initialized.

appError called:

I'm not sure what's going wrong, and don't know how to debug this
(adding --verbose, --debug or --help had no effect). Can anyone help me?
My full system specs are posted here: http://ahri.net/files/specs.txt
should they be required. I'm using ALSA 1.0.2c, and the 3.2.8-r1 ATi
drivers. I also have ESD 0.2.32 running (I tried killing it before
running UT - this made absolutely no difference.)
