While coding the compression dropdown, I did encounter similar problems with 
the ARB extensions, however I've not been able to reproduce this after I 
implemented the dropdown.

We've already established the quality issues of the S3 texture compressions. 
Perhaps this is a similar bug with the GL driver, but I suggest that this is a 
bug that should not re-occur now that the dropdown is on and texture 
compression no longer depends on a check box.
