Hi Timothee,
you are really fast with yout comment :)

Usually my Matrox G400 is running in Hardware GL (at least for wolfenstein) but
for gtkradiant I don't know if it is true (3D view is still very slow,
impossible to work with) or why it should switch to Software GL (you are using
the same libGL loading stuff for wolfenstein)? I was looking for a tool to
trace the gl commands and found spyglass (http://spyglass.sourceforge.net/) but
it's not ready so far.

As far as I know the libGL from XFree86 Version 4.X is based on Mesa. glxinfo
says:
OpenGL vendor string: VA Linux Systems Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI G400 20010321 AGP 4x x86/MMX/3DNow!
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 3.4.2

And from http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/DRI8.html:
Mesa-based drivers (this includes most of the drivers listed above) also observe
many of the existing Mesa environment variables. These include the
MESA_DEBUG and MESA_INFO variables.

Apropos, when I set MESA_DEBUG I get warnings when leaving gktradiant:
GL User Error: calling ; without a current context
GL User Error: calling glGetError(); without a current context
or lots more of
"GL User Error: calling glDeleteLists(4294967295, 1); without a current context"
when I had loaded a map. I'll take a look on that in a few days when I'll have a
day off.
