Patches

Hello list. I've spent the weekend sorting out the FreeSpace situation
on Gentoo Linux. The ebuilds have sat around for years but nothing has
ever been officially committed. I decided it would be a good idea to
split the packages into separate engine and data packages. Gentoo
provides a mechanism whereby CDs can be requested and detected while
installing retail games. The packages I have created are...

- freespace2-cvs
- freespace1-data
- freespace1-demo-data
- freespace2-demo-data
- silent-threat-data

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of FreeSpace 2 (yet) so I wasn't able
to create freespace2-data as well.

The reason I am mailing the list is just to gain a bit of background on
the relationship between the different patches and languages versions
for FreeSpace 1 and Silent Threat. The ebuilds I have written use the
patches found on http://icculus.org/~taylor/freespace/. I made some
assumptions based on what these patches did to my copy of the game,
which is the US version with Silent Threat (I live in the UK though, a
friend bought it for me!). Having now seen what's available to download
at http://www.volition-inc.com/fs/downloads.cfm though, I am starting to
wonder whether those assumptions were correct. I'd be very grateful if
someone who knows about the different versions could take a look at
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50612 and let me know whether
what I've done will work for most people. One of my concerns, for
example, is that there appears to be a French version in existence but
no such patch was listed on icculus.org and so I couldn't cater for
that. Owners of the French version will either have to be patched to
1.06 already or they will have to use one of the other patches,
resulting in a mix of languages. Not ideal!

Regards,
James
