It may depend on the mod.  The issue of it not working in linux is
because of case sensitive filenames.  Sounds, images and textures can be
referenced by the mod in mixed case.  If the mod maker didn't package
files in the same case as they are referenced in tables and models it
won't work.  Packaging the files in a vp gets around this problem.  If
you find a mod that doesn't work (in a vp) let me know and I'll try to
figure out why.  There could be other issues that may prevent a mod from
working but file case is the one big problem.
