You need to 
1) Install freespace 2, this requires either windows or wine.
if you're using wine, it may require multiple cd-rom drives.

2) patch fs2 to the latest version

3) copy *vp files to wherever the binary of fs2 for linux is

4) run freespace2 :)

I think I got everything....
