I never did remember to play with this thing.  After my first few
mistakes trying to get FS1 to work I recognized this right off.  It's
case sensitive file names causing the problem.  If the files were in a
vp then this wouldn't be a problem.  The crash on the menu is the door
animations which are easy enough to fix by editing mainmenu.tbl and
making the anim names lowercase.  The bigger problem is that the model
textures use different cases in different files so this is a pain to
deal with.

I'm going to try and build some vp files instead and see how they work. 
I'll post with a status report when the _extremely_ slow vp creator is
done.
