[cod] mods in linux

any special tricks or configurations to use when trying to get mods to work
on linux?
to my recollection i have gotten openwarfare to work in the past(i dont
remember how now) but i cannot get linux server to exec server.cfg in some
mods
namely the zombie mods

i have made scripts or started from command line +set fs_game mods/mod here
+exec server.cfg

but the server does not exec server.cfg in startup

fs_game in console does bring up the mod but does not exe server.cfg

any help would be appreciated
