Are you paying for your bandwidth? If you are get the ip null routed and will save you a lot of money!

Also by having the server drop the packets your just increasing the load on the server and so still affecting performance of the game, either get your up streams to get the attackers null routed from there network or get a hardware firewall installed in front of the box

Installed this one after having manually iptables DROPped a couple of
DoS'ers a couple of weeks ago, haven't seen it in action yet.

See if your bandwidth provider provides an IPS such as Cisco Guard or
Tipping Point, then get it activated on your machine. It makes a huge
difference. :)
