I use a package called vnstat on my servers. It can measure current
traffic flowing through the interfaces and create an estimation on the
traffic for the month:
$ vnstat -m
eth0 / monthly
month rx | tx | total
-------------------------+--------------+--------------------------------------
Oct '08 111.56 GB | 146.26 GB | 257.83 GB %%%%:::::
Nov '08 47.23 GB | 113.91 GB | 161.14 GB %::::
Dec '08 217.71 GB | 385.27 GB | 602.98 GB %%%%%%%%::::::::::::::
Jan '09 26.47 GB | 54.89 GB | 81.35 GB %:
-------------------------+--------------+--------------------------------------
estimated 111.89 GB | 232.01 GB | 343.90 GB
$ vnstat -l
Monitoring eth0... (press CTRL-C to stop)
rx: 36.94 kB/s 212 p/s tx: 20.03 kB/s 140 p/s
$ vnstat -tr
1615 packets sampled in 5 seconds
Traffic average for eth0
rx 20.76 kB/s 185 packets/s
tx 22.81 kB/s 137 packets/s
