[cod] What ping do you have to your server?

I have a VMWare Ubuntu 7.10 Server which gives me 4-8 in ping.
It's resource allocation is relatively low.

If I ping my server from my XP PC or laptop I get response times of about 1ms or less.

When in game and press tab to look at the COD4 menu it shows 18-24 ping. Is this just the overhead required to run the game or is something wrong?

Server specs:
Quad Core 2.4ghz
5GB RAM
Ubuntu 6 server edition

pretty much a plain install with no other processes eating memory or CPU.
